iPhone, the reason why Safari comes to Windows

19 06 2007

My oh my, why didn’t I thought of that? It seems that even though critics & haterz are going all out in criticizing Safari on Windows, there is actually something that most of us have not noticed, which may very well be the main objective, and reasoning behind why Apple released their Safari browser on Windows. So what is the reason? It is…..TADAAA!

(Image taken from The Apple iPhone Site)

The iPhone!!Never actually thought of that huh!

(Sidenote: DO NOT READ THIS

The iPhones Blue, Orange, and Green “Glass” buttons look awfully familiar….Ahhh….reminds me of the food, culture, and architecture buttons of Project Shutter!!!! See??

The question is…who copied who?  )

Back on topic, according to what I found at Paul Thurrott’s Internet Nexus, which he said:

“No, the future is Safari. First, running on iPhone. Later, running on any number of devices. Traditional and non-computer devices. Remember that the cell phone market is much bigger than the market for desktop PCs. This is big.

And yes, I know it all sounds like a conspiracy theory. But I think that we will all look back on this day as the time when we stopped thinking about desktop OSes and focused on the mobile, Web-based future. This might be the smartest thing Apple ever did. And so far, few have even noticed it. Yet.”

(Taken from Safari, Not Leopard, is the Real News at Apple Show, June 11, 2007)

Safari may not be the future of PC web browsers, but it may very well be the future of mobile web browsers! Going for the mobile market instead? Absolutely genius!

Targeting the mobile market when Microsoft and Adobe are busy battle-ing competing out on the desktop (WPF vs AIR) and web platform (Silverlight vs Flash). But hey, the iPhone may very well revolutionize the whole mobile industry, just like Apple’s iPod, and IMO the design of the device just makes it the most droll-worthy mobile phone ever!

One more cool thing about the iPhone, is that it may very well support Flash! Not Flash Lite, but actually the full flash! Check this out:

“Markoff: “What about all those plugins that live within Safari now, like Flash or like Java or like JavaScript?”

Jobs: “Well, JavaScript’s built into the Phone. Sure.”

Markoff: “And what are you thinking about Flash and Java?”

Jobs: “Java’s not worth building in. Nobody uses Java anymore. It’s this big heavyweight ball and chain.”

Markoff: “Flash?”

Jobs: “Well, you might see that.”

(Taken fromDoes the Apple iPhone support Flash? January 14, 2007)

And looky here…..there is news that Apple are actually looking to employ “iPhone Flash File System Engineer”,

“Responsibilities

* Work with a highly skilled engineering team in the design and implementation of kernel technologies

* Drive product features and functional/industry specifications

* Development of device drivers for Flash and associated file systems

* Work with cross-functional teams to support product requirements for iPhone”

(Taken from Apple Job Opportunities)

Oops!! That just ain’t the Flash we’re talking about, the job requirements clearly state that they actually want someone to work with their iPhone Flash Memory! LOL!

But hey, with the Adobe employees reacting so sensitively to the issue, according to good old Rober Scoble’s blog, IMO we already have an answer

“But, I’ve been poking around Adobe for a while now and know from how they answer this question that something is up and that something has news value:

“How’s the work on the iPhone version of Flash going?”

He instantly answered “I can’t talk about that.”

This answer is so fast, and so consistent, that it just drives me nuts (it’s the fourth Adobe employee I’ve asked about this and got the exact same answer). So, of course, when I get on the bus, that’s the first thing I’m going to ask Kevin Lynch about.”

(Taken from Adobe PR’s greatest nightmare June 17, 2007)

That definitely got me laughing! LOL! So whats Microsoft gonna do next? Silverlight on mobile devices? Its happening on Safari, and if Flash actually goes to iPhones, Micosoft may very well come up with their own mobile device (Just like the Zune, copy of Apple?).

PS: Anyone wanna buy me an iPhone?

More Safari Stuff

15 06 2007

As mentioned in an earlier post, what is Microsoft and Mozilla’s response to the release of Safari on Windows?, this is what I found:

“For companies like Microsoft and Mozilla, Safari coming to Windows means that one more competitor will be thrown into the Windows browser battlefield….”

(Taken from “Microsoft, Mozilla execs respond to Safari on Windows” by Matt Mondok, June 13, 2007)

He’res another article I found, and I kinda agree with it.

“Today Apple released a press release reporting that there were over 1 million people who downloaded the beta software in the first 48 hours. When you first see it, the number seems like a big deal (Apple’s press release helps with that impression)… “

(Taken from “Safari downloads reach 1 million. Is that a big deal? by Jeff Smykil, June 14, 2007 )

On my Vista, Safari keeps crashing…. and even it actually boasts the fastest speed, as shown in their download website, IMO releasing it when its packed with bugs is definitely the wrong decision. The browser battles would definitely get tighter, but at the moment, sorry Microsoft, but currently Mozilla has the better web browser :P

Safari for Windows?

13 06 2007

(Image taken from Apple’s Website)

Safari, Apple’s Web browser, for Macs, oops, now even on the PC! Though it’s currently only in public beta. It boasts to be the fastest web browser, now, on any platform, and if that is true, Microsoft would really have to look into enhancing their Internet Explorer maybe by Vista’s SP1 release?  Probably not, because based on the current market share, IE clearly wins, followed closely by Mozilla FireFox, where Safari takes up only a very very small percentage, you could check out and see some statistics at W3Schools and Safalra.

But with this release, it is clear that Apple has noticed the importance of going cross-platform, especially since Safari could very well integrate its use with other products like iTunes, Quicktime player, etc. It’s a battle of getting the most market share! But the thing I’m interested in is, whether the windows version of Safari would allow us to test whether Silverlight applications could run smoothly in a Mac environment, not sure about that, but currently I’m pretty sure it does not have full support (based on what I’ve seen in Michael Schwarz Blog).

So if you’re interested, do go download the Safari 3 Public Beta. But remember, it’s still in Beta, and the funny thing is, it’s packed with loads and loads of bugs!!

“Researchers were quick to dig up vulnerabilities in the beta release of Apple’s brand new Safari for Windows browser.

Quick may be an understatement. Researchers were finding flaws in the new browser’s coding within an hour of its release, according to Johannes Ullrich, chief research officer of the SANS Institute and chief technology officer for the Internet Storm Center.

This for the browser that Apple touted as enabling “worry-free” browsing. “Apple engineers designed Safari to be secure from day one,” the company said on its Web site. “

(Quote taken from Flaws Abound In Apple’s Safari Beta For Windows by Sharon Gaudin, June 12, 2007)

But still, definitely looking forward to its full release!
