Vista SP1 due at first quarter of 2008, but will it "deal" with UAC?

31 08 2007

Microsoft has finally announced that the final release of  Windows Vista SP1 will be scheduled around the first quarter of next year.

Pretty quick, for an update, seeing that its been about 3 years since Microsoft released Windows XP SP2, and Windows Vista has just be released about half a year ago, but it won’t be anything major, just fixes to enhance the performance, security etc of Vista.

I’m just hoping they get rid of UAC (User Account Control) feature, it totally kills people who do not know how to configure their PC, its far too troublesome, and definitely not the solution to account privilege issues, thankfully, it seems that they’re bending to the will of users (and other companies….like Google :P ), by approving a third-party app that deals with the troublesome UAC.

UAC ain’t user friendly, look at this post from A List Apart, that evaluates on the usability of elevated confirmation windows….I hate them, yes they are needed for certain scenarios, but popping up when I open almost anything is downright annoying.

And yes, I disabled UAC just a day after Vista was installed. No turning back.

Vista SP1 beta 1, releasing at mid-july

10 07 2007

Do notice that it’s just Beta 1 for Vista SP1, and even though it’s just a beta, it’s still nice to have a SP1 that quick, with Vista only released at around at around the beginning of February. I’ve previously blogged about whats probably the main reason behind why SP1 would be released at November here.

Personally i’m hoping they’ll include much more customization features, which are already pretty neat, and of course, get rid of some bugs (not much so far) and usability issues. For more information, check out this post at the ZDNet All about Microsoft blog.

I’m very very impressed by how awesome Windows Vista is (currently running on Vista Ultimate), but nothings perfect, and these are some of the flaws that just bug me:

·         When I right click the desktop, and select Sort By, the menu doesn’t show Auto Arrange, instead, its placed in the View menu, I totally do not get it)

·         When I double click an image file (.png, .gif, .jpg) its supposed to be opened with the Windows Photo Gallery, and display the image file in Preview mode, but instead it comes up with the Windows Photo Gallery’s main menu, displaying all the image files in my computer, but not the one I selected! And I have to right click the image file and select not Open, but Preview instead.

What about you? Are there any Vista bugs that bug you?

Vista SP1 coming soon….thanks to Google?

Just saw this interesting bit from the PC World newsletters, and in fact it’s pretty interesting news, where Microsoft was not the one announcing their SP1, but from the U.S. Department of Justice, mainly because of accusations of monopolization (ahem..ahem, isn’t that what they are heading towards?) of not only the operating system market, but further branching out to other markets, threatening other  (Face the facts people, this is the real world!) Well, do expect its release around the end of this year. (Hopefully they’ll include a more customizable UAC, which currently doesn’t allow me to open Visual Studio with Expression Blend!)
